The things you'll need are:
1. A crossover LAN cable.
2. LAN Cards on both PC's.

Now, once you have the crossover LAN cable, connect it to the LAN cards on both computers.
Now set the IP's on both computers. Like for pc1 set the IP to 192.168.0.1 and set the IP of pc2 to 192.168.0.2.

How to set the IP?

Right click on My Network Places. Select the Local Area Connection and view its properties. In the 'General' tab look for the 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'. Double click on it. Once opened you'll see the option to obtain the IP address automatically or to set it manually. Go for the manual procedure and set the IP. Once you've set the IP the subnet mask will automatically generate value i.e 255.255.255.0, don't worry about it. Now look at the bottom for 'Preferred DNS server'... (this should be the PC which is primarily using the internet connection) set the IP of the PC using the internet as primary.

Click 'OK'.

(On the PC which is using the internet service primarily)
Now for the final step. Go in the 'Advanced' tab and check the box for allowing network users to connect through the internet connection on this PC. Select the desired services you want to use on your secondary PC and then hit 'OK'.

You're done.

Skywalker.
attach cable to both LAN cards and if u do not have an additional slot then u probably have to buy a switch coz u wil be connected to internet through lan cable then u won't be able to attach second system to you computer

secondly if u want to set up a SOHO network then on the main pc which is directly connected to internet you should run network setup wizard from my network places screen and then select >>>this computer is directly connected to internet and in the same very setup for second computer select >>>this computer connects to the internet through residential gateway .............

on the main PC the choose a workgroup name and for second computer provide that workgroup in the same field and u are ready to go

after this go to the properties of internet connection and enable tcp/ip and filesharing ...................and u are ready to go...........u r done.......................................u can further ask if u face any problem

yeah its not a prob at all.
U just need a cross cable and a LAN card on both PCs and then after that u can set the lan properties on the 2nd pc to DHCP enabled...
and then on the 2st pc u need to click on the option in the internet sharing tab to enable it...
thats it...........

here is a beginners guide that can also help u....

I didn't get the point you're trying to tell in the statement I've highlighted.

And a switch is required when you want to connect more than 2 computers on a network. A crossover cable can serve for the purpose when one wants to connect only 2 computers. Ofcourse, no one would want to waste his cash in something that is useless for him.

Motherboards with dual slots are seen rarely.

Simple solution:

Get the desired amount of cable.
A Switch (u'll be glad that u got it)

considering you are using DSL, connect the ethernet cable coming from the model to the #1 port of switch. Your PC's cable in any port, and the other PC's cable in any port.

Next is to set IPs. Use the same IP thats on ur PC, but change the value of last octet between 1-10 (eg)

However, if you are not using DSL and are using cable net, then follow Fahad's suggestion.
