The things you'll need are:
1. A crossover LAN cable. 2. LAN Cards on both PC's. Now, once you have the crossover LAN cable, connect it to the LAN cards on both computers. Now set the IP's on both computers. Like for pc1 set the IP to 192.168.0.1 and set the IP of pc2 to 192.168.0.2. How to set the IP? Right click on My Network Places. Select the Local Area Connection and view its properties. In the 'General' tab look for the 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'. Double click on it. Once opened you'll see the option to obtain the IP address automatically or to set it manually. Go for the manual procedure and set the IP. Once you've set the IP the subnet mask will automatically generate value i.e 255.255.255.0, don't worry about it. Now look at the bottom for 'Preferred DNS server'... (this should be the PC which is primarily using the internet connection) set the IP of the PC using the internet as primary. Click 'OK'. (On the PC which is using the internet service primarily) Now for the final step. Go in the 'Advanced' tab and check the box for allowing network users to connect through the internet connection on this PC. Select the desired services you want to use on your secondary PC and then hit 'OK'. You're done.

And a switch is required when you want to connect more than 2 computers on a network. A crossover cable can serve for the purpose when one wants to connect only 2 computers. Ofcourse, no one would want to waste his cash in something that is useless for him.

Motherboards with dual slots are seen rarely.

Simple solution:
Get the desired amount of cable. A Switch (u'll be glad that u got it) considering you are using DSL, connect the ethernet cable coming from the model to the #1 port of switch. Your PC's cable in any port, and the other PC's cable in any port. Next is to set IPs. Use the same IP thats on ur PC, but change the value of last octet between 1-10 (eg) However, if you are not using DSL and are using cable net, then follow Fahad's suggestion.
