Google's answer to iphone google has setup a 'open headset alliance' (OHA), and released andriod, which is dubbed to be the "the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices."

The name comes from a company google acquired (called andriod), which desgins software for mobile phones.

The OHA includes:
T-Mobile, HTC
Intel
NVIDIA,
eBay,
Samsung
Telefonica
Google.

others: http://www.openhandsetalliance.com/oha_members.html

Who is missing?? Nokia, Sony Ericsson, AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, Orange and AMD

Google's challenger wont come in the shape of a single handset, but it would be an entire range one fit for everyone:

"One size does not fit all," he said. "Our strategy is to find the perfect match for each mobile device user. Android provides the flexibility to optimise the internet experience." (Chief Marketing officer for HTC)

Ofcourse google wont be the only one who will be making phones with andriod as it's OS, other companies, notably htc will do so as well. HTC already does Windows Mobile OS phones. how well this goes down with M$ remains to be seen

Andriod is based on a linux kernel but has been modified with input from many other companies.

possible release sometime around 2H-08!
