Need some help here

Aoa,

I have built a p3 based pc for a friend and there is some problem i want ur advise on....first see the config of pc:

Pentium 3 800 mhz
ECS P6BAP mobo (with sound builtin only)
128 mb SD Ram (i think 100 mhz)
Seagate 40 gb pata
Nvidia geforce 2 mx400 32 mb gpu (sdr memory)

Ok the problem i m facing is tht videos are not playing smoothly....like i was trying to play a wmv file and it was lagging while being played both sound/video r lagging for fraction of seconds....

similarly i played a avi file and it played better then the wmv but wasn't smooth either, like the sound was little behind the video.......i have Klite Codec installed.....

So please tell me what could be the reason for this problem....Thnx

the setup isnt power enough to decode video?
see if u have similar problem if u playback mpeg video (VCDs)

the other reason could be slow data tx from the HD, which is unlikely unless it is stuck in PIO mode rather than DMA (check IDE controller prop under device manager)

can u explain some more on this PIO thing coz i think i have seen something about it in the bios.....

ide drives can work using DMA or PIO mode.
PIO = poll input output. Very briefly
dma = fast, pio= slow
if u have the option set all ide drives to use DMA and not PIO
than make sure that same is set in dev. manager windows.

^ hmm i will chk that out and let u know.....also can 128 mb ram be the factor?? or may be the gpu is not working properly???

Hey Fajoo!

I cant tell you much about DMA or PIO but I believe the hardware should be able to playback normally. My old PC 300Mhz, 64mb ram, 4mb builtin was able to playback .avi files without much problem except that sometimes the video would freeze(the audio continued) but was easily fixed by a a quick double tap of the spacebar(ie pause/play shortcut for VLC).

Btw it might be the Klite codec?! Try using VLC or media player classic(real alternative).

Yeah tht is why i am concerned coz this config can atleast play videos easily with external geforce mx gpu.....i will check how it plays dvd movies directly from dvd....

yes 128 mb ram could be a factor if you have windows xp installed.
Did you install all the lates chipset drivers available on the manufacturer's website. If not then you can do it now.

audio -video desynch, missed frame is pretty indicative of either unprocessed frames (not enough cpu oomph) or slow read speeds

not all .avi files are the same. if they are encoded at high res than they would have trouble playing back on low end systems, esp. if that is a div-x HD coded file
