Microsoft will start talking about DirectX 11 in less than two weeks. Sources have confirmed that Microsoft game technology conference, previously known as Meltdown and now renamed to Gamefest 2008, will be the place where Microsoft plans to officially announce DirectX 11.

This conference takes place on the 22nd and 23rd of June in Seattle, Washington and it will set you back $550 if you register online.

The big feature of DirectX 11 is Tessellation/Displacement while it's also been heard that Multithreaded Rendering and Compute Shaders are part of it. DirectX 11 also brings Shader model 5.0 but not many details are known about it.

It looks like DirectX 11 will stick to rasterization as there isn't any mentioning of Ray tracing support.

Nvidia will also talk about DirectX 11 at its Nvision event / conference in late August 2008.

it should take 6 months to arrive, an year to start entering gfx cards and even then game developers will be far away from showing what dx11 can do, so there will be 2 scenarios:

either market will find dx11 cards but no dx11 games initially or dx11 games will arrive and then the cards will follow(highly doubtful though)

either ways everyone going for the 4850 and 4870 congrats for the future effective purchases

yes i am pretty sure that you have said the right thing ....

this will be a huge conflict in near future between hardware and software ... so my thoughts are same as yours ...

but i still doubt that 4850/70 are future safe investments

well without effective impementation of DX10 , despite IT being out for about a yr, i really doubt it if DX11 would do anything great...in the consumer market..... when the hardware to drive DX10 games comes at a cost that the average (or even above avg) joe can't afford, how can DX11 be expected to replace DX10, when we haven't really used DX10 as of yet

nothing is considered an investment for the pc esp video cards which have a very short shelf life ...
