deltree deltree is offline 30-06-2008, 02:54 PM

need to buy a wifi router...galaxy has a
WRT-54G LINKSYS WIRELESS-G BROADBAND ROUTER (2 YEAR WARRANTY) 3600

first of all who is providing this 2 year warranty? galaxy or linksys has official presence here?

other then that do you guys think this is the right price? what are the ranges on these? any problems issues one might expect to face? user friendliness is of utmost importance!

Linksys doesn't has any official presence here. It is 10 months warranty and 2 years limited warranty; i.e. after 10 months, you have to pay for the router to be couriered to the manufacturer for claiming warranty. Within 10 months, Galaxy will bear the shipping costs.

I just got WRT54GL wireless router today. Beautiful equipment! It did cost quite a bit compared to the G variant but I was adamant on getting a router which supported open source firmwares. However, I haven't installed any of them yet. Might try in the future. Currently, I am using the default Linksys firmware. Just finished configuring it half an hour back to make the internet functional and it is working fine for both wired and wireless devices.

The interface is simple enough to understand and configure. Don't worry on that count.

It's on the default firmware. Range is fine for internet use. In a 1 kanal house, I went from my room (on one end) to the balcony (the other end) with significant loss in speed (from 54Mbps to 18-24Mbps). There are about 3 walls in between the tested points. I lost 1 bar in the graphical representation of the speed. However, the speed is still more than enough for internet use.

I have read that using an OpenSource firmware can result in increased range since they use more transmitting power and enable Linksys's RangeBooster technology.

Good. Default firmware might have problems with P2P softwares. I already restarted the device once. I might have to upgrade to an OpenSource firmware sooner than I previously thought.

using netgear router (the one nayatel offers). i get similar speed as quoted by asad, when i switch floors. staying on the same floor i get a much better performance.

front to back on the same floor usually gets me a 80% signal.
changing floor gets me a 50-60% signal

(router is on 24/7, using the latest fw on netgear's website)
