Hot on the heels of the 4850 comes another budget sleeper hit from ati, the 4870. this ones even more impressive and delivers bucket load of performance for only 299. reminds me of the days of the Geforce 4 Ti4200

We were surprised to see the Radeon HD 4870 competing well against the GeForce GTX 260. [b]It not only matched the gameplay experience, but in Assassin’s Creed it edged out with faster framerates too. Count on drivers to mature in both camps as well.[b/]
This coming from a place which usually spanks ati for terrible performance!

Nvidia better lower its prices or else!

Better late than never, as common saying goes.
1.The best bang for the buck award to ATI 4850 by Tomshardware.
2. It is 19% lower than gtx 260.
3. It is equal or as par to 9800 gtx+.
4.Under 200$.
5.Better lighting per pixel than any of the nvidia offering.
6.Better Antialiasing than any of the nvidia offering.

what is your source of information about the price reduction from 649 to 499, whereas i have information that only 90$ for gtx 280 and 30$ for gtx 260 were curtailed.

the prices have been reduced.

from hardOCP, quoting hexus:

""NVIDIA Cuts Prices on High End Cards

Hexus is reporting that NVIDIA, facing pricing pressure on the heels of the impressive release of AMD/ATI's 4800-series, is cutting prices on the 9800 GTX, GTX 260, and GTX 280 cards. The AIB (board partner) prices will be as follows (all prices are USD):

9800 GTX: $165 ($199)

GTX 260: $222 ($329)

GTX 280: $392 ($499)

(Prices in parentheses are target selling prices.)

An interesting issue arising from this move is the extent to which NVIDIA is protecting its AIBs and the broader channel from these price cuts. Even if it just protects the AIBs it could be looking at an additional bill of $10 million or so and, obviously, if it extends that to the entire channel the figure will be considerably higher.""

the price in brackets is for the oem's. it is up to them how much of the margin they want to keep for themselves and how much would they like to pass to the end user!
