80 GB PlayStation 3 model will not use "PS2 emotion engine"

According to Sony America, the new upcoming 80 GB model PlayStation 3 will eliminate the the "PS2 emotion engine" chip. "The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip," said SCEA's Kimberly Otzman. "The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model." US PS3 owners currently do not need to download software updates to play most of their PSone and PS2 games but buyers of the upcoming 80 GB model will have to if they want to guarantee backwards compatibility.
