haha thanks guys.
VI3 or commonly known as Virtual Infrastructure 3.
Its by VMWare, parent company is EMC.
It's all about virtualizing the Data centre/ server environment.
Think of it this way, you have Win Xp, you install VMWorkstation or VMServer (free to download and use), on that you can install up to 4 different OS. They can be a mix of Linux, Windows 2k, Win2k3 etc all running at the same time.
Take this a step further and you have a bare metal solution with VI3 ( ESX3.x). It's a dedicated machine with sole purpose of running production servers virtualy. These virtulized machines are absolutely like the real thing, difference is you dont need physical hardware, or space leading to low cost when housing in data centres not to mention the electrical and cooling benifits etc.
VI3 offers VMotion. This is the ability to move your virtual machines from one server to another with ZERO downtime. Users can be working and with click of the button you can migrate the machine from one host to other. Its cool stuff.
You can download the VMWare Server, i recomend you download it and install it, and use it. You will wonder why you didnt do this earlier.
Its competitors are XenSource/ hypervisors /Microsoft Virtual Server etc.
But VMWare is a few years a head of others at this stage.
